How to Create and Sell Digital Products With AI in 2026

Digital products ebooks, templates, courses, prompt packs have near-zero delivery cost and can be sold indefinitely after they're created. AI tools have cut the creation time enough that a useful digital product can go from idea to sale-ready in a week rather than a month. Here's how to actually do it.

Creating and selling digital products online 2026

What Sells Well as a Digital Product

The digital products that actually sell share a common trait: they save the buyer time or solve a specific problem they already know they have. Generic ebooks about broad topics don't sell well. Specific tools for specific situations do.

Products with the best sales-to-effort ratio right now:

  • Notion templates (workspace setups for specific roles: freelance designer, content creator, solopreneur)
  • ChatGPT prompt packs (curated prompts for specific industries: real estate, coaching, copywriting)
  • Canva template packs (social media kits, pitch deck templates, resume templates)
  • Short guides or playbooks (100โ€“150 pages on a very specific process you know well)
  • Spreadsheet tools (budget trackers, project calculators, content calendars)

Using AI in the Creation Process

Digital product creation on laptop

For an ebook or guide: use ChatGPT to generate a table of contents from your topic, then write each chapter yourself with AI helping draft and refine individual sections. Format in Canva or Google Docs. Export as PDF. Total time for a solid 50-page guide: 8โ€“15 hours.

For a Notion template: build the structure yourself based on your actual workflow, then use AI to generate the text content (instructions, examples, placeholder text). The template should reflect real usage, not a theoretical setup.

For a prompt pack: use AI to brainstorm prompts, then test every single one manually. A prompt pack full of prompts that don't work well gets bad reviews and refund requests.

Where to Sell

Gumroad is the simplest setup: upload your file, set a price, get a link. Etsy has built-in traffic for design-related products (templates, planners) but takes a cut. Your own website gives you the highest margin and the most control, but requires you to drive your own traffic.

For most beginners, Gumroad first + your own site later is the right order. Don't spend weeks building a Shopify store before you've validated that anyone will buy what you're selling.

Pricing

The most common mistake is underpricing. A Notion template that took you 10 hours to build and saves the buyer 10 hours of their own time is worth $25โ€“$49, not $5. Price based on the value delivered, not the time you spent. A $5 price signals low value; a $29 price signals that it's a real tool worth buying.
